Wolverhampton, a town founded in 985AD, was granted land by Anglo Saxon King Aethelred to Lady Wulfruna, the sister of the old King Edgar. The grant covered an area bounded by Bilsatena, Seeges League, and Tresel. Nine years after the original grant, Lady Wulfruna endowed a minster church on the present site of St. Peter's Church. The new king rewarded his followers with grants of land, and one of his retainers, Samson of Bayeaux, received Heantun or Hantone in 1086. The Canons of Hantone held the land from Samson, and there were over two hundred people, including the canons and other church people. The ownership of the lands of Hantone underwent numerous changes over the next two hundred years, including the prior and monks of St. Mary's Worcester, Roger, the Bishop of Salisbury, the Bishop of Chester, and St. Mary's at Worcester. The church of Wulfrunhampton was mentioned during King Stephen's reign (1135-1154). The Town Hall, completed in 1703, was more of a parish hall for meetings and entertainment in the eighteenth century. Records show the hall was hired by actors, auctioneers, rope dancers, puppet shows, and a "waxman." The Charity School was established in 1710 to educate the town's poor, funded by wills left by wills. The school had a staff of a master, mistress, and governess, with discipline being enforced through a birch rod. Button Gwinnett, a merchant from Bristol, was one of the early subscribers to the school. Wolverhampton's coaching inns, the Angel and Swan, were built at the east end of High Green. These were eighteenth-century counterparts of modern hotels. Between 1751 and 1753, much of King Street was built, including the present-day Old Still Inn. Isaac Taylor's map outlined the construction work, showing the town's edge in the direction of Penn Road. Shortly after Taylor's map was published, a new church was opened for worship, St. John's Church, built of brick "cased" in Perton sandstone. The church's first minister, the Reverend Benjamin Clement, was also minister of Braunton in Devon. The church acquired the 'Renatus Harris' organ in 1762, which was installed in Dublin. St. John's Church was opened for worship in 1760, but its surroundings have changed since then. The only other church official mentioned in these early years was William Shaw, the dog whipper. He was paid six shillings a year to expel dogs from the church, usually gripping them around the neck with wooden tongs. Church records show that Shaw had been "whipping" dogs for at least twenty years. There are buildings within the modern boundaries of Wolverhampton that would not have appeared on Taylor's map but existed before 1750. These include Graiseley Old Hall, which is situated behind the town center. We are sure that you will enjoy your trip to Wolverhampton.
