On 29 July 1944, a V-1 attack on the western side of the station in Lewisham, England, resulted in the death of five people and the destruction of numerous homes. This was one of 115 V-1 rocket attacks on the area that summer, with the most devastating being the previous day when 51 people died in Lewisham High Street. Following the war, nine prefab bungalows were built on the site, with council bungalows likely appearing in the early 1960s. Beaver Housing Society homes replaced some of the destroyed homes, and Ardmere Road, built in the 1870s, was considered one of the poorest in the neighborhood by Charles Booth's researcher Ernest Aves in 1899. The area was in "chronic want" compared to the comfortable middle-class housing of much of the rest of the area. The Hither Green Community Garden, established in 2010, was cleared and maintained by volunteers from the Hither Green Community Association. North Park Farm, which was later farmed by the Sheppards, was owned by the Earls of St Germans until the sale to Cameron Corbett in 1895.
